There is a general agreement that Personalised Medicine in Europe needs an integral chain approach supported by a strategic European agenda and bound by coordinated actions amongst all parties at stake: patients, scientists, health care professionals, industries, policymakers, funders, regulators, etc.
Although Europe seems to be in a good position a lot still needs to be done. Some state that fragmentation and diversity form the soil of progress. Reality shows however that we are far from actively building on this diversity. Europe needs to speed up its operations by putting more emphasis on cooperation through combining and aligning activities. There are many European national and regional projects on similar topics and themes without proper alignment. This hinders cost efficiency and delivery of innovative and personalized healthcare approaches to the benefit of European citizens.
As EuroBioForum aims to bridge the gap between the performers and funders, Wouter Spek will expand on what the role of funders is in stimulating developments in Personalised Medicine, what kind of financial incentives we need, how we can benefit from the initiatives which are already financed and up and running.
